The rainbow flag really has a long a varied origin. To get a complete understanding of the uses it has had see the "Rainbow_flag" link below

The orginal useage of a rainbow flag was as a peace symbol during the Stonewall event in the 60's. It was later refined into the current copyrighted flag as being the symbol of unity and diversity at the same time.

The other two links are from the use of pink as a designation of prisoners in Nazi camps.

well aside from own personal opinions, i went to a south-eastern "gay" conference in Columbus Georgia and they had over 41 seminars about how to deal with gays at school ((mainly colleges)) and how to treat gays equally through academic and social organizations on campus and i was told that even though people use the rainbow TODAY, the color that represented gays was purple/violet. im not sure how valid these professors were but it IS there field of study and they taught at universities all over the south east region of the US....

but side note i think the person that said it represents the diversity within the gay community.

Try Wikipedia, but as I heard, it was made by a gay revolutionist during the Blackwall (?) insident in New York at the late 60s. The rainbow clothes he wore became a symbol.

I think maybe because it has all the colors together on one flag. It is kind of a symbol for everyone being different (the different colors) but getting along or being united as one.

Rainbows have diffrent colors, so people have diffrent emotions, senses, diffrent... tastes in others.

There are plenty of colors in a rainbow, and there are plenty of feelings in a person who is bi, gay or lez.

hope i helped?

I do not know. I like rainbows, and people think I'm gay because I do. It makes me mad because rainbows aren't only for gay people, you know.

The rainbow flag (also (gay) pride flag and freedom flag is a symbol of LGBT pride and LGBT social movements in use since the 1970s. The colors reflect the diversity of the LGBT community, and the flag is often used as a symbol of gay pride in LGBT rights marches.

It originated in the United States, but is now used worldwide. Designed by San Francisco artist Gilbert Baker in 1978[1][2], the design has undergone several revisions. As of 2008, the most common variant consists of six stripes, colored red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. The flag is commonly flown horizontally, with the red stripe on top, as the colors would appear in a natural rainbow.

It is heavily rumored that the idea of the rainbow came from the iconic movie star/singer Judy Garland's song "Over The Rainbow" from the 1939 film "The Wizard of Oz".
