Question:
Why are so many gay people Liberal?
2010-10-20 08:30:24 UTC
What is it about being gay that makes someone liberal? I understand the "conception" that conservatives are all anti gay who would apparently ride thru gay neigh boor hoods in white cloaks killing gays if not for Democrats. But what is it about their policies that you like so much? Are the vast majority really all pro-choice, pro big govt or do you think because you agree with the social policies that you should support the fiscal policies. Are there any gay Libertarians?
Eleven answers:
Trust me!

Good question, and the simple answer is they have been feed this line of BS that the left really cares for their cause. Its a lie plane and simple. Just as its a lie that the right would ride through Gay neighborhoods. the truth of the matter, most of your gay bashers are welfare trash who live on the lefts' check programs. They feed off the HUD payments to their whores who they keep knocked up 9 months of the year. Most conservatives really don't care either way, we do have a tendency to not like things shoved in to our faces, but subscribe to live and let live. I know, I'm a conservative and I'm gay.

A libertarian is a true liberal. Government shouldn't be making laws about marriage, defining it as between a man or woman or anything. Honestly, it would save itself a boatload of trouble if it just changed the word marriage to civil union (call it what you want otherwise). It's legislated morality- which is supposed to be a no no. It's odd but the parties seemed to have switched a bit. Democrats, albeit conservative democrats were the founders of the Klan and a republican freed the slaves. I am pro-choice, but that is a very libertarian concept. I am also very much against expending the federal governments power-some of its power must be taken away. Watching what happens with the fed when prop 19 passes in CA will be interesting. The DOJ said federal drug laws will be enforced regardless of what the people of CA decide. The DOJ should follow the constitution and enforce the laws it is supposed to, like immigration law!

"Most conservatives are homophobes."

-Neoconservatives I think would be more correct, I know many conservatives who are not homophobes (and plenty of "liberals" that are homophobes)

There are definitely gay Libertarians, and even some gay Republicans. Personally I'm socially liberal and fiscally moderate. I don't love democrats, and while they usually don't make the lives of GLBT people better, they don't make them worse. When you're gay voting for a Republican is basically saying it's ok if your life sucks even more than it already does, so you're forced to just tune Republicans out even if they make good arguments on some topics. If both parties were for equality then I would willingly give Republicans a chance, and I might even vote for one, but until that point I don't have a lot of choice with my vote.

I'm a moderate, really. There has to be an equal balance, in my opinion.

I support limited government interference with the personal lives of it's citizens, but I also support social programs. Without some of these programs, some people wouldn't be able to make it month to month. I believe that in order to have a good nation where it's people all feel equal (even if they aren't), that the nation should do what it can to help it's own citizens. In my view, it's rather hypocritical for our nation to spend millions of dollars on foreign aid, when there are people in our own nation starving and homeless. It just doesn't seem right. It's about the willingness to open your heart to your neighbor. We are only as strong as our weakest link, after all.

I am pro-choice, but against abortion. For me, it's not an acceptable choice to make. But, I can not in good conscience place my own sense of morality onto others. That isn't how this nation works.

I base all of my opinions on issues on my own morals. I don't listen to pendants to gain any sense of where I should stand (most have their own agendas to push). I take all things into consideration with each issue, and weigh them against my morals and the US Constitution.

I am a FIRM defender of the principles that our Founding Fathers took so much time and care to devise. These were great men and some of human histories greatest thinkers. I have even taken the time to read their own works. It has allowed me the ability to gain much insight into their beliefs and ideas for our nation.

You answered your own question right there, the vast majority of conservatives are homophobes that hate LGBT people, that's why most LGBT people are Liberals and not conservatives, in fact I wouldn't be surprised at all that if it were truly all up to the conservatives if the conservatives had their way it wouldn't surprise me at all that to this day homosexuality as a whole would still be a crime punishable by up to the death penalty nation-wide all across the U.S.A. just like the same way that it once used to be in the U.S.A. hundreds of years ago, or the same way it still is to this day in the year 2010 in nations like Iran or Saudi Arabia in those 2 nations homosexuality unfortunately it is a terrible crime punishable by up to the death penalty or life inprisonment in Iran & Saudi Arabia today in the year 2010, those two nations are definitely on the wrong side of history for sure.

Because Liberals APPEAR to be more supportive of gay issues.

I'm a Right-leaning monarchist and I know of Tory, moderate, fascist and National Socialist gay people. All gay people aren't Left-learning. Be advised that many Communists are against homosexuality.

To be libertarian is to be a fiscal conservative and a social moderate. Since gay people are better educated and better employed (FACT) than the general public, that would almost seem a given. While I am registered as non-affiliated, I often agree with libertarian positions.

Personally, because I support greater restriction on private enterprise. It's not really that I trust the government, it's that I distrust the corporation more.

Civil/Gay rights is just about the only topic where I find myself thinking liberally.

There actually are many gay republicans. Most are still in the closet though. And you answered your own question. Most conservatives are homophobes.
