I will be joining a sorority as soon as i can (Delta Sigma Theta). Lately, I've been wondering why did the ladies of DST leave the AKA's ?? Just curious, because Im tired of hearing "There wouldnt be a delta sigma theta if it werent for the AKAs" and "AKA's come first Delta's come second" I dont like it at all because i believe that delta sigma theta is the best sorority there is since it is filled with women of extravagance. =)

A group of 22 ladies who had been inducted as Alphas wanted the organization to be more political and national in its outlook and split off from the chapter at Howard in 1913 and chartered themselves as Delta Sigma Theta on January 10, 1913. While the Alphas had existed since 1909, they did not officially incorporate until January 30, 1913. '

And the 'women of extravagance' bit makes it sound like 'b*****s with attitude,' so get down off you high horse and don't be smug and self-superior. Service to the community is what's most important.

Members of AKA (including their president) wanted the sorority to have a true purpose beyond social. They wanted to serve the community and be a part of a sorority with a meaningful name, colors, flower, colors, etc., so they founded Delta Sigma Theta. Now Delta Sigma Theta is the largest black sorority with the highest requirements and a very impressive list of members.

I had to do a black history project about the Alpha kappa alpha (aka) and my caculation was alpha kappa alpha is actually the best sorority because there wouldn't be Delta Sigma Theta if Alpha Kappa Alpha so if your reading i prefer you to go to Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority The best sorority for women thank you all god bless you have a good night

AKA is where it did start; however, to make a long story short (and not to give information that may/may not be allowable to put on the internet) there was an objection from changing the name from AKA to DST. Hence, two separate sororities remained their own separate entities.

I wouldn't necessarily say that Delta is second, especially since we are the largest African-American sorority in the world. To those who want to add to the division between these sororities, tell them simply this:

The initial members of AKA and DST consisted of our founders. Without any of them, DST nor AKA would probably never had existed.

I'm sure you could find this out much easier just by ASKING one of them. Why is it that you imagine that random strangers over the internet have ANY idea about what's going on in your school, without even knowing what school you go to? Also, I don't know how this question qualifies as a "Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered" issue. Perhaps you could explain.

P.S. Being filled with "women of extravagance" doesn't make a sorority "better", it just makes it more extravagant. Not necessarily a good thing in civilized parts of the world.

Hon, stick with how you feel. For a year I was in a sorority, the games became to petty for me. Don't fall into that trap. Just have fun, the original reason for sororities. Why did they leave? They'll never say it was because of their egos. And one sorority isn't better than another, the girls in it determine that.
