why is ok for women to say, "oh she's so hot, pretty, etc". But, oh no if a guy says something similar to that what happens? People will give him a strange look and ask him "are you gay"? But why? Is it because, in a modern society a straight man who gives another man a compliment automatically allows others to call him gay? See how that contradicts itself? I just would really like to understand why its considered "wrong" if a straight guy simply gives another guy a compliment its considered taboo or something?

Right now, our culture is -- thanks to the media -- highly polarized. Anything that isn't steroid macho is looked on with suspicion.

It hasn't always been like this. If you read the Nero Wolfe mysteries, written until the 70's, you'll find the action-hero narrator Archie Goodwin making observations about other men -- a snappy dresser, good-looking (but not as good as Mr. Goodwin), etc. The audience for these stories didn't assume Archie was gay, he was just assessing the other guys-- who were sometimes romantic competition and sometimes suspects.

Two hundred years ago, in Regency England, lots of heterosexual guys went to incredible lengths to outdo each other in fashion and style.

It's cultural. Right now it's okay for girls to acknowledge that another girl is pretty or attractive, but not men. It's a great steaming pile of post-bovine compost, but it will eventually change because these things always do.

Well I often think that most women are basically gay and although not active they have sexual feelings for other women . Whereas men feel odd if they were to think of other men in a sexual way , women don't and wouldn't say no to a liaison with a 'hot' chick .

Well, men don't usually give compliments unless there's a chance they're gonna get laid.
