both words are out of place. Gay means happy, and not all gays are happy. Queer means odd, and not all gays are odd. It seems like whoever started applying these words to homosexuals were ******* idiots.

Queer has traditionally meant ‘strange’ or ‘unusual’, but is currently often used in reference to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex communities. Its usage is controversial and underwent substantial changes over the course of the 20th century.

Gay is almost exclusively used today in its homosexual and related senses. The earlier uses of festive, colorful, bright can still be found but have fallen out of fashion and are liable to misunderstanding, unless used in a way that suggests that a fashion is common among homosexuals.

Gay in referring to things viewed as homosexual is largely replacing the more pejorative sense of queer.

As far as I understand it, queer has political implications. Queer is identified with radical politics. Gay and queer are also different identities for homosexuals. They are different ways of viewing one's homosexuality. One may prefer to identify as queer, wile another prefers to identify as gay. I hope I'm not messing this up. I've had conversations about it with a friend, and this is the way I understand it.

What do you mean by, "The way gays perform the sex act"?

There is no ONE WAY gay people have sex. In fact there is nothing gay people do that straight people don't also do as well.

Almost every kind of sexual act I can think of is enjoyed by both gay and straight people- anal, fellatio, cunninglingus, frottage, breast play, mututal masterbation etc. In every position from the karma sutra

Seems to me the only sex you have is missionary style straight sex. I feel sorry for your female partner if other kinds are too "queer" for you. You're depriving her and yourself of a lot of pleasure.

In the 1960s. Homosexuals began using the word "gay" to refer to themselves, and mainstream media adopted it. Some usage of the word to imply homosexuality can, however, be noted earlier, to at least the 1920s.

"The subcultural usage started to become mainstream in the 1960s, when gay became the term predominantly preferred by homosexual men to describe themselves. Gay was the preferred term since other terms, such as "queer" were felt to be derogatory. 'Homosexual' was perceived as excessively clinical: especially since homosexuality was at that time designated as a mental illness, and 'homosexual' was used by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) to denote men affected by this 'mental illness'."

Queer meant that there was something wrong with someone. Being gay isn't wrong!

Just cuz it's queer to you, doesn't mean it is. I bet heterosexual sex seems "queer" to a gay man.

Many descriptive names have been deemed to be unacceptable in the UK,and I assume also in the USA?

These names are no longer 'Politically correct'.

That term seemed to pop up out of nowhere!

it is called political correctness - after one word ie gets negative connotations they change it to something that sounds better - a little more, gay, we might say !!
