They are not; it is simply that when a man exhibits the feminine traits, they draw more attention to themselves. The masculine gay blends with the rest by and large, so few are pointed out, outside of their domain, but a feminine gay can not get out of his house without being noticed, so their presence is amplified a hundred times.

That's a stereotype. You only notice the effeminate ones because they stand out. I'm sure there are a lot of gay men you don't realize are gay because they appear "normal" to you. And not all prefer masculine men, just like straight men have different tastes in women.
Additional info: It's also true that some gay men affect effeminacy because they relate to each other that way. In other words, when they hear the "gay lisp" come out of another man's mouth, they think "oh, he's family". Easier to identify each other that way. It's not true of all gay men, of course, but it happens. I hope this answers your question.

Short answer is - you only notice the effeminant ones. The manaly man gay guys are all around you and you don't even know. My brother was gay. Died 4 years ago. You would have never known he or any of his friends were gay. They were not closeted just not real femimine.
