Is it necessary to have "gay" and "lesbian" included when "lesbian" is just a sex-specific term for gay/homosexual? Why isn't it just GBTQ or HBTQ?

My old college club used the letters: GLBTTQQIAPPS in an attempt to include everyone. We were also called Alphabet Soup for this reason. The letters meant as follows: G-Gay, L-Lesbian, B-Bisexual, T-Transgender, T-Transexual, Q-Queer, Q-Questioning, I-Intersex, A-Asexual, P-Pansexual, P-Polyamorous, S-Straight. We were like a gay straight alliance, but wanted a different purpose on the campus.

Because gay is guys and lesbian is for girls. There is no difference between bi guys and bi girls so they don't need it to be specific and if we were going to be specific for Trans people we would need like 88 things for them and no ones to say or write LGBTGTGTHTGTL etc etc etc! And trans can either say "I'm gay/I'm a lesbian/I'm Straight." If were going to chance LGBTQ we should take out the Q and put an A. I mean seriously? Questioning? That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard having Questioning added to LGBT and not A because Asexual is actually something unlike Q which is just stupid afraid people being stupid and afraid!

There's a joke in the "B" community that the only ones who matter in the LGBT community are the L's and the G's. My personal interpretation of that aphorism is that it's because the L's and the G's say that the B's don't actually exist, and no one's really sure what to do with the T's.

Well, gay is technically a homosexual man, a lesbian being a homosexual women. So why not have them both, unless lesbians are included. And doesn't the Q stand for queer- which means gay anyway.

Oh, Alex! Gay men are gay men and gay women are lesbians. Trust me they are NOT one in the same. The letter are identifiers since this human race we are all a part of must label EVERYTHING. So since we must label at least we try to label correctly. To call a lesbian gay would be like calling a truck a car it just isn't!

Why is there a T when being transgender has absolutely nothing to do with your sexuality? Why is there a Q when anybody can question themselves but that doesn't mean they are part of some specific community since nearly everybody goes through a stage in their where they wonder? The L is included so that women can feel like they're not being excluded. At least that's my opinion.

If it were up to me I would just call it "The Sexuality Category" instead of "The LGBTQ Category". This way you don't have to label everyone (gay, straight, bi, transexual, asexual, etc.) and it'll be nice and short.
