Question:
How to get a good night sleep?

The moon and stars come out, you put your jammies on, time to get to sleep! But who says it’s easy like that? Sometimes, no matter how much you try, you don’t sleep as well as you wanted to.

I have suffered with insomnia all my life. I have tried just about everything. I agree that a good days work helps you sleep well. Also you need to be able to turn off your mind and not dwell on your problems. I make a list of what I need to do next day and then shut down. If I have done every thing I can to sort a problem then there is no point in losing sleep and besides some times the answer can come in dreams.

I like a walk before bed, but agree that coffee, tea, alcohol and nicotine wont help you sleep.

Relying on sleeping tablets isn't good in the long term.

I think you need a routine of going to bed at a certain time. Also of getting up early and being active, eating regularly etc.

This particular question that is posed here just happens to be a highly appropriate subject for me to answer. I, however, do not intend to offer some apparently intelligent phrasing or extensively detailed perspective as to how to get a good night's sleep. Doing so truly would not be very fair at all. In fact, there are various approaches, and, while one way is effective for one individual, the effectiveness of any one specific approach towards obtaining a good night's sleep can differ drastically from one person to another person, and apply differently from one time to another time. While some people may find an answer to sleeping quite well to be quite simple, the constant research performed all the time, all around the world, indeed all by itself, proves that it is certainly not such a simple process. A good night's sleep can usually be rather subjective and complicated. This issue often does change with lifestyle, life's stages, life's events, etc., etc. There are so many natural relaxation methods to those artificially induced medicated treatments, and even beyond. Honestly and realistically, there is no single approach or answer that applies to everyone, all the time, in obtaining a good night's sleep.

The answer lies in watching smaller groups of people to see how they go about their day to day business and lives, what they eat, what exercise they get, how they cope under certain pressures etc.

The problem is that too many people have an opinion based on utter nonsense and general perceptions. Most people are lazy by nature in the sense that they do very little physical or strenuous work throughout the day but perhaps ‘think too much’. Busy being busy but not really doing much in the way of excursion. It is these who form the higher percentage of those who ‘can’t sleep’.

Take a look at your local military base. Those people eat the same as anyone else. They smoke as anyone else. They eat just as much sugar and ‘bad’ food as anyone else. They drink as much as anyone else. Yet they are kept busy. They are at it physically all day. I can assure you that they get a good night’s sleep after their day. Try spending a day in the life of a grunt in a war torn environment. 18 hour work day then sleeps like a baby for 6 and they do that for 6 months at a time.

Don’t tell me it’s the sugar, coffee and big macs. Lazy and unmotivated people will always find any excuse and will continuously ignore the answer. Get off your fat or skinny arses and do some exercise.

The more your muscles work (and continue to work after exercise is done) the more sleep you will get. Be more active during the day physically. I don’t just mean a 30 minute jog in the morning either.

Trust your body. It's well aware of its need for sleep. Thinking that you'll go on and on without enough sleep is like thinking that you might forget how to eat if you lose your appetite because you snacked too much before dinner. You're probably getting more sleep than you think. When people say they "didn't get any sleep last night," there's a good chance they dozed a bit now and then without noticing it.

Sitting around all day is one of the things that contributes to insomnia. Exercise can help a lot, though not at night or the early evening.

Habits that promote good sleep are called "sleep hygiene." Go through the same routine at bedtime and don't use bedtime as your "worry zone." Good source - the Mayo Clinic insomnia article - Home Remedies section.

A lot of people have gotten into trouble with prescription sleeping pills. They knock you out amazingly fast when you start using them, but very quickly you need more to get the same effect. Also, you may be surprised at how quickly you become DEPENDENT on them. If you have insomnia, be thinking about ways to deal without prescription sleep aids. There's a supplement called melatonin that's much safer, and this is something you could talk with your doctor about.

With a case of insomnia, it makes sense to find out the cause. For example, it's often a symptom of depression. If you were suffering from a case of clinical depression, the best way to treat it would be to get a physical from the GP, who might be able to give you a good referral.

Make sure you have a good mattress--and that's totally subjective depending on the person. If your mattress has started developing dips and valleys, time to get a new one. Make sure you have the right pillow for the way you sleep. Either eat our last meal several hours before bed, or eat a very light, not spicy meal. Don't do any mentally or physically stressful the hour prior to bed. Develop certain habits that let your body and mind know to prepare to sleep--brushing teeth, taking a shower, etc. Make sure the room is warm or cool enough for your taste. Put up black-out curtains. I find getting enough exercise during the day helps a lot. Also eating balanced meals. Go to bed at about the same time every night. Routine.

Make sure that you are tired enough to actually want to go to sleep. If not ready then keep doing things until you are. Be careful what you eat and drink in the evening and equally careful regarding what you watch on T.V. or read late at night. You need to be calm and tired to sleep well and some food will keep you awake, some will give you indigestion once you lie down so research all your options or ask a medical person about that aspect.

Try and sleep with a clear mind. Only think of positive thoughts before bed and never think of any chores or tasks you need to get done. Make a list of things to do the next day so you don't have to worry about them in the present. You just need to keep trying to sleep around the same time each day and eventually if you follow these steps you will fall asleep quite easily within around 30 minutes or so. Try and go to bed earlier than you usually would if you know how long it takes you to fall asleep. Myself personally had a really hard time sleeping but then I realised how to fix it without taking sleeping pills.

Hope this helps!

It merely doesn't depend on activities just before going to bed.

1. Make a routine to sleep before 10:30pm and wake up after 8 hours of sleep. Don't sleep in mid day.

2. Go for a walk in morning as well as evening. It will relax your mind.

3. Take breakfast, lunch and dinner on right time. Dinner can be done 1 hour before going to bed.

4. Drink a lot of water daily. It will make you active and will remove tiredness.

5. The environment where you sleep shouldn't be noisy. Your mattress should be comfortable.

6. Always be happy, don't take any depression or tension. If you are facing this, resolve it.

While I personally pray to God to put me to sleep. I know many disagree. but it just happens. If you have a hard time sleeping, try not to drink caffeine after 4 and don't have more than a few drinks of something with caffeine if you need to sleep. I personally can't sleep without pajamas, but wear whatever works best for you, whether it's PJs, day clothes or even something fancy. Exercise in the day will also help most people fall asleep faster.

it's not that hard.what you need to do is that during the whole day try to tire your brain and body.you should always indulge yourself in some good work.do your studies and mental problems or exercises(it will tire your brain as well as improve its functioning)and play a lot or do some other work(it will tire your body as well as make you fit). don't sit idle.all these things will make you enough tired so that by night your body will demand sleep to regain its energy.when you go to sleep stop thinking anything and relax.you will get a good night sleep.and if sometimes you are not feeling sleepy then don't force yourself to go to sleep.when you feel you are enough tired and want to have a sleep then only go to bed, till then keep doing some work.

Warm bath and try to stay warm after the bath before going to bed. I sleep poorly if my hips and thighs are cold. Since I am a lifetime insomniac I cannot drop off like other people. Wish I could hit the off button and be out like a light, but not so. Reading a boring book like " The History of Tree Surgery" helps enhance the drowsy state. Eating a small low sugar snack an hour before bed may help. Froot Loops will not work for this.

ive had 10 -13 years of experience in this situation. so i know a few practical things. there are known to be about 82 causes of sleep deprivation. which of course waters down the most common reasons which are published.

the number one cause of sleep deprivation is stress, yet, what causes the stress? work place conspiracies to poison others? drugs that people dont even know of are being used in circles of sorceries and witchcrafts covens. causing sleep deprivation makes the will of the mind and heart to become weakened, and in the weakened condition, they are suseptable to mind control and sub conscience control. drug rape is the most common sin of this entire world. whereever one goes in the world there will be someone that practices these kinds of poisons and drugs. sleep deprivation for me! happens when a dream is repressed. or repressed memories are working to come forth in the conscience ways.

see the wickedness of drug rape, from the beginning of the bible in Genesis 19. both Noah and Lott and probably Abraham suffered at the hands of wickedness. compare the KJV with the JST where in verse 39, the word "wicked" is added to describe what the daughters of Lott did to their own father.

one can take sleeping pills, but they only work until the chemicals that originally cause sleep deprivation are changed. i tried every natural product, and at the end of ten years my doctor told me to get rid of the sleeping pills, i think i had about 75 $ worth of pills and through away a hundred dollars worth of herbal rememedies.

i found that some old wives remedies work just as good as pills. like taking a spoon of honey. but i found that marshmallow cream works just as good. i found that covering my bed with a clean blanket offered 6 hours of sleep when i realized my bed was the thing being poisoned. without a clean blanket i would sleep ten minutes every three days, even though i would almost uncrontrollably fall asleep driving home in the car. or that i could fall asleep anywhere else other than my apartment.

i think things have changed in the last ten years. and there are more things that i did to get any amount of sleep. but mostly in that ten year period i would only sleep ten minutes every three days and one day a month during the last 5 years. stress is not the cause, the cause that causes stress is the problem, and many people practice this CRAP and do destroy lives with their conspiracies.

Drink No caffeine after 6pm and go walking or do some excises before bed and read a book can really help you fall asleep.

Also another thing is stay off the computer at night time! Too much online stuff can keep you awake or make you sleep less.

There was a brief period in my life long ago when I experienced mild insomnia. I found it very hard to go to sleep, which I now believe was caused by stress relating to an impending musical performance that I was constantly pecking over. I had never experienced this, so it caught me off guard; I was used to putting my head on my pillow and almost instantaneously falling into a rem sleep, so when it took me hours every night to escape into sleep, I began to get worried. Eventually, however, as summertime came and most of my stresses related to school and whatnot had already been released, I found my insomnia disappearing, and I went back to my normal, quick-to-fall-asleep self.

Naturally, I fall asleep around 15 seconds to 2 minutes after my head hits the pillow--depending on how tired I am at the moment. Generally, what I do to allow myself to go to sleep is by tapping a rhythm using my fingers on my headrest, and eventually I find myself fading into sleep without even knowing it.

The roll over signal theory works well for me. Just don't roll over. By rolling over, you are telling yourself to stay awake. Here are the steps:

1. Make sure not to drink caffeine before hand.

2. Before bed, make sure you have everything done, including eating or going to the restroom. This frees your mind and thoughts.

3. Make sure the room is a comfortable temperature, and put on pajamas or comfortable sweats.

4. Turn on any white noise machine you like (optional)

5. Turn off the lights, get into bed, and make yourself comfortable.

6. The desired position is laying flat on your back, legs slightly apart, arms by your side, not touching.

7. Close your eyes and attempt to clear your mind.

8. No matter what DO NOT ROLL OVER! This includes all movement. This will only restart the sleep cycle and make it take longer.

And voila! You will fall asleep within the hour, never over.

if its legit insomnia, then it will be difficult sometimes to get a good nights sleep. to many people these days have 2-3 nights in a row where they're up to 3-4am and automatically assume they have insomnia. sometimes with insomnia, you don't always feel tired. I have nights where I get 8-9 hours sleep and wake up feeling even more tired then I did before I slept. then theres some nights where I am awake and get 3 hours max, but I wake up feeling refreshed. It does all depend on the person, their lifestyle etc etc. but please, don't rush into thinking insomnia because of a few sleepless nights, it could be anything, stress, emotions, worry.

Do some exercise before you to go sleep. It doesn't have to be much. It'll release some energy, which will help you relax!! Once you're done exercising have a nice warm bath, and drink something hot, like sleepy time tea or hot milk. Wear some comfortable clothes to bed!! and make sure it's not too bright in your bedroom. If you're not scared of the dark like me then you should turn all your lights off. Play some relaxing music in the background, look for playlists on youtube with relaxing songs. I like to listen to a composer called ludovico einaudi. his music is really relaxing. i hope this helps! :)

Be physically active throughout the day. Don't be too late or too early to sleep.

Make yourself fresh and comfortable before going to bed.

Strain your eyes a little reading some stuff which is of no interest to you.

Fix a time to think of your serious problems in advance. Do not take it to your bed.

Make a habit of leading your thoughts to some areas which is not directly related to you. Brain need something to chew till you slip into sleep. Fantasies, mathematical solutions, your senseless inventions. etc..for which you don't necessarily need an answer.

I've developed a few techniques for getting to sleep when you are stressed or worrying about things.

One of them is to imagine a big box with an airtight and lockable lid. All the thoughts are like ribbons flying around my head. I grab them all and stuff them in the box, then lock the lid. Now I can think about anything except what's in the box. If my mind starts to drift back onto the problem subject I immediately grab that "ribbon" and stuff it into the box with the rest of them. Repeat as necessary.

Sounds silly but it works, it trains you to control your thoughts. Now I only have to think about the box and I'm asleep in 5 minutes.

Another one, good for money worries, is to imagine your financial situation is a computer game, and you have pressed the pause button and walked away from it. It's on hold, nothing is going to happen overnight, the banks are closed, deal with it in the morning.

I am a Doctor although not specialist in this subject. You can look for Sleep Hygiene in a searcher. Also most mobile phones and tablets and some TV sets won´t permit you to sleep properly if you use them before going to bed. Web pages like Wikipedia, MedlinePlus, fisterra, netdoctor, familydoctor are usually trustworthy. For some people may be good to unplug the electrical appliances in their bedroom before going to sleep. Not only to turn them off but to unplug them. You can also go to your doctor if you don´t sleep right or to a herb shop (herbalist)

Sometimes it will take a little while. What I like to do though, is get in front of the fan so that I'm cold, and ready to snuggle under the nice warm covers. Once im cold and snuggling under the nice warm covers, I relax my whole body. Then I close my eyes and turn to one side. And think about something that you want to have a dream about. Sometimes you can be out in like 5 minutes, sometimes it will take an hour, but it usually works for me.

Sleep is natural habit and quality of each individual. You see the fish never forgets its natural quality and habit of swimming. Similarly birds never forget its natural quality and habit of flying in the sky. In the same way, there is no reason why we human cannot get good sleep. If we have crystal clear mind and pristine pure heart, we should sleep like a child or sleep like a log.

The causes for restlessness are due to huge accumulation of impurities in the mind and imperfections in the body. It may be also due to ignorance, illegitimate desires or indulgence in unwanted pleasures, urges, impulses, emotions like envy, pride, hatred, anger, fear, jealousy, lust, greed, conceit, pride, temptations, etc. and bondage. These impurities and imperfections spoil our clarity of understanding, create disturbances in the and mind and thus rob our tranquility, judgment and observation capacity, mental approach, etc. resulting in oscillation, distraction and distortions. Flush out immediately all such impurities and malice from your mind.

Mind has restlessness because of the bad impressions that have gathered within us. These impressions, particularly those of an emotional one are of the nature of attachment and aversion and they cause restlessness.

Actually the mind has the natural tendency to remain calm but the adverse forces within us make the mind move, oscillate and waver. The more the mind is purified, the more the mind becomes calm and in the calm mind, there is “knowledge” Calm mind is capable of being concentrated and knowledge grows faster through concentration of the mind.

We are what we eat. So please take care of your diet habits. Our thinking, speaking, actions, dreaming, sleeping and imagining patterns have a direct relation with the quality and purity of our intake.

I have had sleep problems for years...

Ive tried everything from not drinking or eat after 5pm. Taking a long walk and than a hot bathe/shower before bed.

Ive darken my room , to listening to certain type of relaxing music.

Watching tv -reading .

Sometimes it can be as simple as a underling health issue. Talk to your doctor about it.

I always get a good sleep. don't exercise before bed, that will keep you awake. I eat right before bedtime.. not sure if that's a factor or not. I sleep on a couch with two dogs and a cat. Make sure the blankets are just right and the heat is turned down. I leave the tv or a radio on too.

I'm giving the advice below because I know it has research behind it.

1. Establish routine: go to bed at the same time and get up at the same time. No matter how bad your night's sleep has been get up at the planned time.

2. Caffeine: do not consume any beverage with caffeine in it for several hours prior to going to sleep.

3. Use of the bedroom: Only use the bedroom for two things, sleep and sex. Do not read in bed, play computer games, watch TV, etc. Get it into your mind the bedroom is for sleep.

4. Computers: do not use or play any time of computer, game console, or electronic device for at least two hours prior to going to bed.

5. Bedroom comfort: ensure that your bedroom is set up for sleep. Make sure the temperature isn't too extreme, too hot or too cold. A little on the cooler side is more conducive to sleep. Ensure that it's dark, if not get curtains or blinds that will make it dark. It needs to be a quiet room as well.

6. About two hours before you go to bed have a warm bath, as the body cools after the bath that can help, our body's natural cool at little prior to sleep.

7. Get outside everyday and get some sunlight, it helps regulate your body clock.

8. Set aside all your worries and concerns before you go to bed. A good way of doing this is to write them down and then make a list of ways you're going to start dealing with them.

9. If you have trouble getting to sleep try this relaxation technique (others will be found on the Net): think about each area of your body, taking one small area at a time and thinking about how it fells, is it too warm , too cold, in pain, comfortable, etc. and if it doesn't feel right try to relax it. Work up very gradually to from the tips of your toes to the top of your head. This always works for me. I've always been asleep prior to reaching my neck.

10. If you wake in the night ask yourself why have I woken up. Do something about it. If you need a pee go to the toilet. If you're thirsty get a glass of water. Whatever you do don't dwell on it or get upset because you've woken up. Deal with the reason and then go back to sleep.

11. If you wake up and really can't get back to sleep then don't toss and turn but get up and do something that might make you sleep, e.g. watch some TV or read a book.

If this problem is short term may be you might get some sleeping tablets off your doctor. BUT, this must be a short term solution. If it's a long term problem go and see your doctor, he/she may be able to refer you to a service that helps with sleep.

Please note if you try the things I've recommended please persevere, they won't work immediately.

Good luck!

In the past i used to suffer insomnia and i found my own solution which consists in stay still as long as you can, you eventually will fell asleep, try to avoid rolling in the bed going from one side to the other, no movement at all, its hard at the begining but you can easily get good at it, doing some workout before going to bed helps a lot!

Of course you can use medication but i recommend to do it natural, its possible trust me, even i thought that it wasnt but im glad i was wrong, good luck!

I can only go to sleep because I take prescribed anti depressant which makes me very drowsy. If I don't take it, I just can't go to sleep due to all the stress and thoughts I can't escape.

Medication helps to the point.

Most people have this certain difficulty on their life. You count sheep, numbers and random stuff, but still, you can't catch that sleep. For me, it's important that you don't drink any beverages with caffeine. Or if you're a caffeine dependent, drink at least 3 to 4 hours before going to bed. You can also lessen your sodium intake. Drink one glass of water before going to sleep. And lastly, disconnect yourself from the internet, 2 hours before going to sleep.

I find my inner peace. Pray and meditate over the good things in life. Push back any negative spirits that try and interfere with that. The whole, "Peace, be still" thing works great for me. As a Christian, we are heirs to the Kingdom. We are given powers, gifts, just as Jesus has. He, while on Earth was tempted by Satan and told to command angels. Satan knew Jesus could do that. It's the same gift, as heirs, that we are blessed with. Command angels of peace to come and comfort you and warrior angels to come and fight any contrary spirits that may try to disturb your sleep. It works every time, every time.

You can try putting dried hops, and lavender in a breathable pillow. It'll help put you to sleep, and stay asleep longer. I actually switched to a hammock and i sleep a lot better now. way cheaper then a bed, easy to move, easy to wash, and there's no pressure points like there is in a bed. I wouldn't trade my hammock for the most expensive mattress. (i have a hammock stand so there's no need to anchor it in the wall.)

Avoid caffeine after noon.

Avoid eating after dark.

Avoid bright lights after dark, this includes avoid staring into any sort of CRT display after dark, no TV, no computer, no tablet. This is the main thing actually. Staring into the light resets your clock. DO NOT STARE INTO THE LIGHT.

Drink plenty of water.

Drink herbal tea like chamomile.

Valerian root is a natural herb that will help induce sleep if you need it.

Don't drink anything before bed, you'll just have to pee all night. Make sure you're actually tired when you try to go to sleep................ I only go to bed when I feel like i'm about to fall asleep on the couch. Otherwise I'll just lay in bed tossing and turning and going on my phone.

my wife ties me down to the bed (or a chair if she kicked me out of bed because I p!ssed her off). it's very comfy and relaxing. I usually go straight to sleep. I need to have restraints on every part of my body for it to work, and it genuinely has to be inescapable. the downside is that my wife has complete control of sex, but it is a worthwhile compromise.

If you're like many Americans, you're probably not getting enough sleep. Constantly on the go, you may think you never have enough time to finish everything on your to-do list. But that doesn't mean you should shortchange your sleep -- or your health, for that matter.

"People don't respect their sleep enough," says Robert C. Basner, MD, director of Columbia University's Cardiopulmonary Sleep and Ventilatory Disorders Center and professor of clinical medicine at Columbia University Medical Center. "They tend to think of it as a nuisance and don't look forward to it as something that is really restorative and will help them the next day and the day after that."

So start by making sleep a priority in your life. Then, follow these simple tips to help you get better ZZZs and wake up feeling refreshed every morning.

Sleep Fix #1

Give your bedroom a makeover.

Make your sleeping area conducive to rest by keeping it dark and quiet. If you live in a city, consider using a white-noise machine to block out loud noises. Keep in mind that your body temperature drops at night, so you want to keep your room environment at a cool, comfortable level.

Sleep Fix #2

Get enough sleep.

Most people need seven or eight hours to optimally function, says Nancy Collop, MD, director of the Emory Sleep Center in Atlanta and president of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. "You don't want to be tired or sleepy during the day," she says. If you need an alarm clock to wake up, find yourself chugging caffeine to stay awake, or you nod off during meetings, you may not be getting enough shut-eye.

Sleep Fix #3

Establish a regular routine.

Try to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day. People who frequently switch their sleep times experience something akin to jet lag. Basner points to "Sunday night insomnia," where weekend warriors stay up late on Friday and Saturday and then have trouble falling asleep on Sunday. "Just that 24-48 hours can shift your circadian rhythm and cause poor sleep," he explains.

Sleep Fix #4

Put away your gadgets.

It's tempting to watch TV or surf the web from bed, but those activities usually make it harder to wind down. The latest research suggests that artificial light coming from laptop screens, TVs, etc. suppresses the sleep-inducing hormone melatonin. So give yourself a technology curfew and turn off those screens at least an hour before bedtime.

Sleep Fix #5

Get up instead of tossing and turning.

If you have trouble falling asleep or wake up in the middle of the night, don't lie in bed just staring into space. Get out of bed, do something that is relaxing, and come back to bed when you feel drowsy. "Keep the bedroom associated with sleeping rather than being awake," says Collop. If you're a worrywart, try to make a list of things you need to do the next day an hour before bed. That way you can get your worrying done before you get into bed, she says.

Sleep Fix #6

Avoid alcohol before bed.

Contrary to popular opinion, drinking alcohol before bedtime is not a good idea since it disrupts sleep and causes nighttime awakenings. "Chronic use of alcohol also takes away slow-wave sleep," says Basner. "It wears off quickly, and then you're left with nightmares and sleep fragmentation." Caffeine before bedtime is also a no-no.

Sleep Fix #7

Know how much sleep your kids need.

According to a National Sleep Foundation (NSF) survey, only 20% of adolescents get the recommended nine hours of sleep per night on school nights. The NSF recommends that children ages 3 to 5 need 11 to 13 hours; ages 5 to 10 need 10 to 11 hours; ages 10 to 17 need 8.5. to 9.5 hours; ages 18 and above need 7 to 9 hours.

Sleep Fix #8

Make bedtime a priority for the whole family.

School-age kids benefit from a regular bedtime routine. Use rituals that help children wind down like a bath, brushing teeth, and story time. Be aware that your kids may try to push the bedtime limits. "Kids are pretty savvy, they'll try to manipulate parents if they can to keep coming back in the room and parents need to try to avoid giving into to that," says Collop.

Sleep Fix #9

Get help for daytime sleepiness.

Daytime drowsiness can be dangerous, because you may be at risk for falling asleep while driving. Unexplained sleepiness is a surefire signal that you should talk to your doctor. There are treatments available for cases of sleep apnea or narcolepsy. Insomnia is a common complaint, but if it persists for more than a few weeks, you should see your doctor to get to the root of the problem.
