Because of an underlying fear in society about becoming infected by immoral and sinful activities.
These beliefs began in th 1500's by the Puritans, a protestant movement that strove to purge all sinnful nature from their followers.
This is the same sort of societal reaction in North America as the witch hunts in the 1700's, and even the Communist hunts in the 1950's.
These Puritan influences are weakening, but are still predominant in North America.
Christian Ideals:
There are also people who claim to be anti-homosexual because of writings in the Christion scriptures, which are by and large taken out of context. However there is at least one specific passage that says a man is to lay with a woman. Nowhere in the Christion passages does it say to ostracize, condemn, or harm homosexuals.

I am not gay but I am pro-Gay Marriage.
I don't see the Biblical argument and here is my reasoning...
If the Christians are using the Bible to define the word "Marriage" then why aren't they using the Bible to define the word "Divorce"? And divorce is legal!
The ONLY reason the Bible gives for divorce is infidelity / adultery...
Adultery is legal.
One or the other People!!! Either you follow the Bible or you don't!

because straight people have been fooled into believing that somehow gay marriage will infect their own marriages (something i really don't get... how does someone else's marriage devalue yours?). they believe (falsely) that marriage is an institution that goes as far back as Adam and Eve (which of course it doesn't, only being endorsed by governments in recent times). and also because it is one of the last controls they can manage to hold over LGBT folks, treating themselves as if they somehow deserve rights that others don't. it's pretty weird.

AND, of course, as lissa grim so beautifully exemplifies--because so many of the USian electorate are painfully ignorant. ("in-moral" indeed.)

Simply because Marriage means between a man and a woman.
If you want to have a civil agreement go ahead, no one cares.
